El Niño Slams Southern California Roads and Transit

El Niño rains have hit Southern California!

El Niño has brought more rain to Southern California in one storm than it had in all of 2015. The much needed precipitation has brought an average amount of 1.3 to 2.46 inches of rain with each storm. While the rain has provided a slight relief to the California drought, it has also brought weather-related traffic to the region. No major roads have been closed, but there have been several road closures throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. Mudslides and flooding have plagued the area, and have increased traffic. The Sepulveda basin flooded causing road closures, and mudslides like the one on Malibu Canyon on the Pacific Coast Highway have caused roadside damage. Areas that have recently been victim to wildfires are at an increased risk for mudslides. In addition to the flooding and mudslides, traffic has been increased by the rainy weather. Hazardous driving conditions brought by the storms have increased Southern California's already maddening traffic. For some Los Angeles residents, their morning commute more than doubled in time. Car accidents increase during stormy weather which significantly increases driving time. Drivers are advised to drive slowly and avoid slow lanes and carpool lanes. Those lanes are prime locations for storm drains and may flood more easily if backed up. The storms have also caused power outages. These power outages can cause added traffic delays with out-of-order traffic lights. Southern California drivers should take extra care while driving during the El Niño season and should be prepared for traffic delays.
