Drones come to Amazon!
With ever improving technology, Amazon's latest endeavor entails the use of delivery drones. The Amazon program titled, Prime Air is Amazon's solution to quick and efficient package delivery. These drones which weigh about 55 pounds and fly under 400 feet will be used to deliver small packages weighing up to five pounds to customers within a ten-mile radius. Additionally, speed will be a major benefit as deliveries will be sent within 30 minutes of your purchase. And, Amazon puts safety first. The drone technology comes equipped with sensing technology, called €œsense and avoid €, to help keep drones avoid any accidents.
So where are these drones? Prototypes are still in the works. While the use of said delivery drones has been criticized, Amazon recently rebutted such criticisms with its latest drone testing. Before Amazon releases the drones to the public, further testing needs to be conducted.
The company plans to release their revolutionary program internationally, Development centers are currently located in the U.S., the U.K., and Israel, and testing is also being conducted internationally.
Amazon, however, also has federal aviation regulations to overcome. The drone program hasn't been welcomed with open arms. There has been testing to implement the service in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Netherlands. Although, strict Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations have slowed the process for the company. While they approved testing of the drones, the FAA isn't ready to commit to allowing the drones to roam freely and start delivering packages across the country.
Amazon remains optimistic and hopes to release its final drone program plans later this spring.
